Enjoying FALLing into Routine… and then…

10-8-2011 062
Benji in Point Park,
Lookout Mountain, Chattanooga, TN
School has been going so well, mom forgot we needed to blog. Winking smile Seriously, there were a few shaky days but all things considered I have done quite well. My first grade teacher has a good idea about me, she even managed to get me to read! Can you believe that?
Mom and Dad did have a parent teacher conference with Ms. H to make sure they were on the same page. Turns out that they were pretty close to it. Ms. H is really understanding about my sensory issues and my food allergies. (Even my heart!)
Other than school things have been so – so. I quit going to Tae Kwan Do for about three weeks. It was a combination of I was getting over heated and it was wearing me out, plus there was the whole issue about sparring. Went back Thursday and the Dojo Master was impressed that I still remembered the forms. (Basic 1-3) I seemed to have a lot more focus too.
Adjusting to my “habit breaker” has not been fun. Thought I had been sneaky and was able to suck my thumb anyway, but then I had to go back to the dentist to have it checked. The dentist made it where I couldn’t suck my thumb and told me that when I come back if I am still they will put another piece in that makes it hurt to suck the thumb. That doesn’t sound like fun.
Lastly, the picture is from Pointe Park on Lookout Mountain in Chattanooga, TN. We went there last weekend while we were visiting my Godmother for her wedding. I was excited to see the big cannons! I was sad I ended up getting sick and wasn’t in the wedding. Sad smile
That’s all for this time. Hopefully posting will be a bit more regular. HaHa!

Visiting the Dentist

Today is one we knew, deep down, that would eventually come.

One of my big sensory issues is that I have an oral fixation. I like to suck my thumb. No big deal, right?

My dentist is VERY concerned that my habit is doing some damage to my mouth. It appears that because I suck my thumb so much it is causing my teeth to miss-align.

So, this morning I get to go to the dentist to have an appliance put on my teeth to keep me from sucking my thumb and to prevent my teeth from moving the wrong way anymore.

I am nervous. And I am afraid its going to hurt.

Love your Smile!

I got to go to the dentist yesterday. Mom  really makes sure I go because we were told that a lot of children with congenital heart defects tend to have problems with their teeth. Since we want to be healthy and strong, we go regularly.

Before I went to the dentist though, mom had to get me some antibiotics as a precaution. The hard part is that typically I would get a liquid. It used to be amoxicillian suspension, but it has red 40 in it and I react badly to red 40. (rapid heart rate, bouncing off the walls for HOURS, once I fall asleep I wake up the next morning with a hangover, as mom calls it) So, mom had a little difficulty with the antibiotics, we had to go with the capsules and she had to open them and put it in applesauce for me to take.

The precaution is for my heart. Since I have a bicuspid aortic valve with stenosis, if there were bad bacteria on my teeth when they were cleaned it could cause a heart infection and put me in the hospital. None of us want that. :)

Finally, we all (my siblings and I) go tot he dentist and have our checkups. My teeth are good and strong for baby teeth and doing a good job with brushing. I have two wiggles (loose teeth) that need to come out ASAP because the big teeth want to come out. I have a week to wiggle them out or I will have to let Dr. Perdue pull them.

I really like Dr. Perdue, he and his staff are very nice and they understand my sensory stuff. They even took a picture of my smile they liked it so much!

Slowing Overcoming...

So, Benji still has the cough with the flu. He's been fever free since Saturday. Slowly getting better. Couldn't tell he was sick during the day. It's at night that it all catches up with him.

The down side to this is that he missed the last two days of school before fall break and we are out for two weeks. So those of you with sensory kids can understand when I say it's been rough!

Being sick, schedule changing, not able to play outside cause it is raining, etc... is driving him crazy! So glad we found the Sonic collection at Game Stop last night for the PS2. It was only $12. So at least he can focus on playing it and have something to do.

We go to the dentist tomorrow for the regular check up/cleaning. I pray all will be okay there. He is oral defensive. Doesn't really like us messing with his mouth.

Dental Visit

So... we went to the dentist yesterday. I wasn't really looking forward to it with Benji's oral defensiveness. Last time we went he wouldn't let go of me and had a fit when they tried to clean his teeth. I can say I can relate... I really don't like going to the dentist. But I want my kids to have healthy teeth. So.... back to the dental trip.

We had fun getting the antibiotics for Benji... The scheduling coordinator either forgot to call them in or the Pharmacy put it under the wrong Benji. Wednesday night we thankfully were able to get the pediatrician to call them in so we had them in plenty of time. But it was a hairy 2 hours getting it. LOL...

So.. yesterday (Thursday) we dropped off the fab 4 at day camp and Benji and Kimmie went to see Dr. Perdue. When it was time to go back, Benji tried to persuade us to let him stay in the playroom. (They had the Cars video game) After a little bit of persuasion we got him to go
back. I reminded the hygienist about is oral defensiveness and she said if we have any problem we will come and get you. They didn't come and get me. (The kids tend to do better if mom isn't in the room about their whining and fussing, but if the parent wants to go back, they can. This is Benji's 3rd or 4th visit so I am comfortable with them taking him.) About 10 minutes later they went ahead and called Kimmie back and I waited for about another 15 minutes and they were done.

Benji's teeth weren't bad at all... In fact I was told it appeared we were cleaning them well, all things considered. (This is funny because Benji won't let me brush his teeth. He brushes his own by chewing on the rubber brush and then on the regular tooth brush.) It is obvious that little boo is a thumb sucker. He has the V. But it wasn't as obvious as it was last year. Plus we are trying to get him to stop sucking his thumb. It's hard when that is his comfort thing when he gets anxious. And being a child with Sensory Integration Disorder, anxious is alot.

But, good check up, no cavities, he goes back in 6 months. Oh... and the trick? They had the Cars movie on.
